Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
ANIMALIA CHORDATA AMPHIBIA ANURA RANIDAE

Scientific Name: Pelophylax demarchii
Species Authority: (Scortecci, 1929)
Synonym/s:
Rana demarchii Scortecci, 1929
Taxonomic Notes: Largen (1997) examined the only known specimen (a syntype) of this species and concluded that it was most similar to Pelophylax ridibundus. It should, therefore, be placed in the genus Pelophylax. It is possibly a synonym of a member of the P. ridibundus complex.

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Data Deficient     ver 3.1
Year Published: 2004
Assessor/s: Malcolm Largen
Reviewer/s: Global Amphibian Assessment Coordinating Team (Simon Stuart, Janice Chanson and Neil Cox)
Justification:
Listed as Data Deficient because known only from a single specimen of very uncertain provenance, and there continuing doubts as to its taxonomic validity as well as absence of any information on its extent of occurrence, status and ecological requirements.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: This species is known only from the unspecified type locality in Eritrea. It is known only from two old specimens, one of which survives. It is possibly closely related to (or even synonymous with) Rana ridibunda. It is also possible that the species is not even native to Eritrea (R. ridibunda having been introduced widely elsewhere in the world), and the specimens were perhaps not even collected in that country, but the amphibian fauna of Eritrea is too poorly known for these issues to be resolved at present. Given the current state of knowledge, it is not possible to map this species' range.
