This species occurs in small streams and has a restricted distributional range (EOO <20,000 km²) and very small area of occupancy (AOO <2,000 km²). It is known from approximately ten locations most of which are threatened by water abstraction associated with agriculture. Some streams are also affected by seepage from mines via the dolomitic groundwater. Alien Micropterus spp. are also a threat. The species qualifies as Vulnerable under criterion B.
