Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
ANIMALIA CHORDATA REPTILIA SQUAMATA POLYCHROTIDAE

Scientific Name: Anolis cristifer
Species Authority: Smith, 1968
Common Name/s:
English Cristifer Anole
Synonym/s:
Anolis pentaprion Smith, 1968
Norops cristifer (Smith, 1968)
Taxonomic Notes: Anolis cristifer was originally considered to be a subspecies of A. pentaprion, based on a single male specimen the characteristics of which appeared to fall within the variations shown by southern populations of A. pentaprion (Smith 1968). It was elevated to species status based on distinct differences in scalation by Köhler and Acevedo (2004) and Köhler (2008). Since this species has not received much research attention, the taxonomy of it may still need to be resolved.

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Data Deficient     ver 3.1
Year Published: 2011
Assessor/s: Mayer, G.C.
Reviewer/s: Bohm, M, Collen, B. & Ram, M.
Contributor/s: De Silva, R., Milligan, HT, Wearn, O.R., Wren, S., Zamin, T., Wilson, P., Sears, J., Lewis, S., Lintott, P. & Powney, G.
Justification:
Anolis cristifer has been assessed as Data Deficient. This species' extent of occurrence has been estimated as approximately 13,100 km2 which would qualify the species for a VU assessment under criterion B1. Potential threats may occur within its range in the form of habitat destruction for agricultural development. However, the species has not received much research attention, so that while the species' range may coincide with protected areas, it is unknown what effects habitat destruction has on the populations. Research is needed to bridge this knowledge gap and establish the species' habitat requirements as well as assess the effects of habitat loss on the population.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: This species is known from Chiapas, Mexico, to central Guatemala, along the Pacific versant below 1,500 m elevation (Köhler and Acevedo 2004, Köhler 2010). The area in which this species is distributed is approximately 13,100 km2.

Population [top]

Population: There are no population data available for this species.
Population Trend: Unknown

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Based on the Pacific lowland distribution of this species (Köhler 2010), the habitat of this species is most likely mixed savanna and semi-deciduous forest (Stuart 1943), as well as evergreen forests.
Systems: Terrestrial

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): This species' likely habitat was and remains under threat from habitat conversion for development and agriculture. This has been particularly noted for the Pacific lowlands of Mexico and Central America (Duellmann 1999, Stuart 1943). However, it is unknown how this is affecting the species.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Parts of this species' distribution range coincides with protected areas, for example La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve. Further research into the threats and their effects on the population, as well as the species' habitat preferences is required. Also research into the taxonomy of the species is needed to solve some of the uncertainty surrounding it.
