Scientific Name: Elattoneura pluotae
Species Authority: Legrand, 1982

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered   B1ab(i,ii,iii)+2ab(i,ii,iii)   ver 3.1
Year Published: 2010
Assessor/s: Dijkstra, K.-D.B.
Reviewer/s: Amakye, J.S., Ogbogu, S.S., Tchibozo, S. & Smith, K. (IUCN Freshwater Biodiversity Unit)
Justification:
This species is short-listed by Dijkstra and Vick (2004) as western African odonate requiring special attention. It is only known from type material, a stream near Kedougou, which is of undisputed taxonomic status. Despite being a conspicuous insect occurring in a reasonably surveyed area it has not been rediscovered since it was described in 1982. A proposed dam in the area is likely to have severe impacts by flooding some, if not all, of the species habitat. The area of occupancy is less than 10 km² and the extent of occurrence is less than 100 km² and it is only found at one site. The species is therefore listed as Critically Endangered.
History:
2006 Critically Endangered (IUCN 2009.2)

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: The species is known only from near Kédougou in southeast Senegal. The site is on the border of Guinea, where the species is expected to occur as well.

Population: No information available.
Population Trend: Unknown

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Known only from a small stream.
Systems: Terrestrial; Freshwater

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): A proposed dam in the area is likely to have major impacts upon the species by flooding some, if not all, the potential habitats of the species.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: No conservation measures known but research into population numbers and range, biology and ecology, habitat status, threats, and trends/monitoring would be valuable.
