Range Description: Hemignathus obscurus was endemic to Hawai`i, USA2. It was apparently not uncommon until 1895, but declined rapidly, with the last report being in 19402.

Habitat and Ecology: It inhabited mountain koa-`ohi`a forest (500-2,000 m).

Major Threat(s): Its extinction was probably because of deforestation and introduced disease-carrying mosquitoes which are prevalent in the lowlands1.
