Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
ANIMALIA CHORDATA MAMMALIA CHIROPTERA VESPERTILIONIDAE

Scientific Name: Harpiola grisea
Species Authority: (Peters, 1872)
Common Name/s:
English Peter's Tube-nosed Bat
Synonym/s:
Murina grisea (Peters, 1872)
Murina grisea Peters, 1872
Taxonomic Notes: Prior to Bhattacharyya (2002) this taxon was known only by type specimen. Bhattacharya (2002) collected another specimen from Mizoram and after a detailed cranial study resurrected the genus Harpiola Thomas, 1915 that was earlier treated as the subgenus of Murina Gray, 1852 (Srinivasulu et al. in press). This species is retained under the genus Murina by Simmons (2005). However, Kuo et al. (2006) recently resurrected the genus Harpiola after examining it to be distinct from Murina based on specimens collected from Taiwan. The taxon grisea is placed under the genus Harpiola by Kuo et al. (2006) following Bhattacharya (2002) based on marked differences in dentition between Murina and Harpiola, validated by Kuo et al. (2006)".
