Justification:
A gallery forest subspecies recorded from the Jubba and Webi-Shebeli Rivers in southern Somalia. The population has been estimated by Gippoliti (2006) at perhaps not more than 200-500 individuals, assuming an average density of one animal per hectare within its range, and declining. However, there is very little in the way of firsthand information from its range on actual population status. Nonetheless, best available evidence suggests the taxon should be listed as Critically Endangered based on estimated small population size, continuing decline, and the likelihood that no subpopulation numbers more than 50 mature individuals.
