Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered   C2a(ii)   ver 3.1
Year Published: 2008
Assessor/s: Chen, X.-Y. & Jiang, Y.-E.
Reviewer/s: Kullander, F. (Freshwater Fish Red List Authority) & Smith, K. (IUCN Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment Unit)
Justification:
Xenocypris yunnanensis is endemic to Lake Dianchi, Yunnan Province, China. The major threats to the species are introduced fish species both competing and causing the habitat loss as introduced grass carp heavily grazed macrophytes in the lake, the loss of breeding sites, over harvesting and water pollution. The population started to decline in the 1970s and the last two specimens were collected in 1985. Habitat quality and quantity continues to decline. More survey work is needed to confirm whether the species is still extant.
