Justification:
Listed as Data Deficient as the species is very poorly known, and there is very limited information available on its distribution, population size or abundance. However, given the likely threat of habitat loss, the species may warrant listing as threatened in future.

Range Description:	This species is reported to have a disjunct distribution range between the northern banks of the Tsiribihina River north to Baie de Baly in western Madagascar and to occur in the forests of Belo sur Tsiribihina and Aboalimena, the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park and Nature Reserve, and the Tsingy de Namoroka National Park (Mittermeier et al. 2008). Also possibly recorded from Besalampy (which is mangrove habitat). Ranges from sea-level to 900 m.

Population:	There is no reliable information on the population status of this species. It is probably not as common as M. murinus.

Habitat and Ecology:	This species has been collected from dry deciduous forest in the Tsingy de Bemaraha Nature Reserve and the Andramasy forests north of Belo sur Tsiribihina, as well as along the border of heavily degraded deciduous forest and savanna at Aboalimena (Rasoloarison et al. 2000). They have been recorded in mangroves in two localities, neither of which were near primary deciduous forest (Hawkins et al. 1998; J. Ganzhorn pers. comm.). Its ecology and behavior remain to be studied.

Conservation Actions:	This species is listed on Appendix I of CITES. This species is reported to occur in two national parks (Tsingy de Bemaraha and Tsingy de Namoroka) and a nature reserve (Tsingy de Bemaraha). There are no specimens reported in captivity at this time (Mittermeier et al. 2008). Research priority is surveying between known points of distribution, and whether the species occurs more widely in mangroves requires further investigation.
