Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern     ver 3.1
Year Assessed: 2008
Assessor/s: Craig, M.T., Choat, J.H., Ferreira, B., Bertoncini, A.A., Rocha, L. & Heemstra, P.C.
Reviewer/s: Sadovy, Y. & Moss, K. (Grouper and Wrasse Red List Authority)
Justification:
Mycteroperca xenarcha is a widespread but poorly known species. Although more information is needed, it is unlikely to be declining at a significant rate, and so it is not currently believe to be threatened. The species is therefore listed as Least Concern.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Mycteroperca xenarcha is found within the eastern central Pacific and ranges from San Francisco Bay, California (USA) to southern Peru. The holotype was reported from the Galápagos Islands and this is the only record from there; it is more than likely that the specimen has been mislabeled and is probably actually from Peru (Rosenblatt and Zahuranec 1967).
Countries:
Native:
Chile; Colombia; Costa Rica; Ecuador; El Salvador; Honduras; Mexico; Nicaragua; Panama; Peru; United States
FAO Marine Fishing Areas:
Native:
Pacific – southeast;  Pacific – eastern central

Population [top]

Population: Mycteroperca xenarcha is abundant in a portion of its range (southern Baja California). There is only one record from San Francisco, USA. Surveys with fishermen indicated that this species was once more abundant in Mexico.
Population Trend: Unknown

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Mycteroperca xenarcha is a demersal species that occurs from mangrove areas to over hard bottom of the continental shelf and the slope. According to Thomson et al. (1979), this species prefers mangrove estuaries. Adults and juveniles occur in shallow water with adults found to depths of 60 m.
Systems: Marine

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): The fishery is not a major threat, but Mycteroperca xenarcha is incidentally caught. Perhaps the major threat to the species is loss of habitat (mangrove habitat) from infrastructure development for housing and tourism.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Mycteroperca xenarcha is a fully protected species in California and presumably occurs in protected areas within other parts of its range.
