Formerly included in insignis (Chasen 1940) or niobe (Chasen and Kloss 1927). This species is part of the rodent fauna endemic to the Mentawai Archipelago.

Listed as Near Threatened since although its extent of occurrence is probably less than 20,000 km² and its habitat might be declining, thus making the species close to qualifying for Vulnerable under criterion B1ab(iii), it is probably abundant on Siberut island and it is likely to be tolerant to habitat modification.
