Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
ANIMALIA CHORDATA ACTINOPTERYGII CYPRINIFORMES CYPRINIDAE

Scientific Name: Labeo lankae
Species Authority: Deraniyagala, 1952
Taxonomic Notes: Eschmeyer (1998) and FishBase both note this as a synonym of Labeo porcellus. Correspondence from R. Pethiyagoda for the 1996 Red List indicates that lankae should be maintained as a distinct species endemic to Sri Lanka whereas porcellus is confined to northwest India, south of Bombay. The 1999 Red List for Sri Lanka on the otherhand only uses porcellus and does not refer to lankae at all. Further taxonomic work is required here.
