Geographic Range [top]

Range Description:	Gallirallus dieffenbachii was endemic to Chatham, Mangere and Pitt Islands, New Zealand³. It is known from the type, in Tring², with one other specimen reported to be in Bremen¹, and from abundant subfossil material⁵. The species was already scarce when the type was collected in 1840, and was extinct by 1872³.
